Dr Beatrice Widell

BA, MA (Uppsala University); PhD (University of Reading)

Dr Widell graduated with a BA in Art History (2014) and a MA (2016) in Archaeology from Uppsala University. She was awarded a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Reading (2021). Her doctoral research explored the medieval soldier experience of going to battle by analyzing battlefield landscapes and their archeological, historical, folkloric, and topographical evidence from a phenomenological perspective. She studied three fourteenth century case study battlefields in northern Britain that were part of the Scottish Civil Wars (Scottish Wars of Independence). Her doctoral research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (South, West, and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership).

She has published in Landscapes (2017) and Church Archaeology (2019).

Dr Widell previously worked for SCIO (2022-2023), and has most recently worked in science policy and public affairs at the Royal Society and the Institution of Civil Engineers, before returning to SCIO in 2025.
